How Many Pavers Do I Need?
Figuring out how many pavers to buy comes down to three things: the area you are covering, the size of one paver, and a waste allowance for cuts and breakage. Get those right and you avoid both mid-project shortages and a pile of leftovers.
Step 1: Measure the project area
For a rectangular patio or path, multiply length by width in feet. A 12 by 16 patio is 192 square feet. For a circular space, measure the diameter across the widest point and use π × (diameter ÷ 2)². For an irregular shape, break it into rectangles and triangles, total each piece, or just measure the overall footprint and accept a little extra waste at the edges.
If your pavers will run under an edge restraint or into a border, measure to the outside of the paved area, not the visible face. Small differences add up across a large patio, so measure the longest and widest points and round up to the nearest few inches.
Step 2: Find the coverage of one paver
Pavers are usually sold and labeled in inches. To get the area of a single paver in square feet, multiply its length by its width in inches and divide by 144. A common 8 by 4 inch paver covers (8 × 4) ÷ 144 = 0.222 square feet. A 16 by 16 inch paver covers (16 × 16) ÷ 144 = 1.778 square feet. Larger pavers cover more area each, so you need fewer of them — but they also produce more waste per cut.
Step 3: Divide and add waste
Divide the project area by the per-paver coverage to get the theoretical count, then add a waste allowance and round up to a whole paver. A 192 square foot patio using 0.222-square-foot pavers needs 192 ÷ 0.222 = 864 pavers before waste. With a 10% allowance: 864 × 1.10 = 950.4, rounded up to 951 pavers.

Worked example
A 12 by 16 foot patio (192 sq ft) using 8 by 4 inch pavers (0.222 sq ft each) with 10% waste: 192 ÷ 0.222 = 864 pavers, × 1.10 = 950.4, rounded up to 951 pavers. If the same patio used 16 by 16 inch pavers (1.778 sq ft each): 192 ÷ 1.778 = 108 pavers, × 1.10 = 118.8, rounded up to 119 pavers.
Don't forget the base and sand

Practical cautions
- Buy all pavers from the same batch if possible — color and size vary slightly between dye lots.
- Keep a few extra pavers for future repairs; matching an old style years later is hard.
- Check the actual paver dimensions on the pallet, not just the catalog size, before finalizing your count.
