Detailed breakdown

How to use the undefined

Enter the room length and width. If several rooms use the same flooring, set the room count to add their areas. Enter the coverage printed on each flooring package and a waste allowance for cuts and pattern matching. Choose whether your price is per square foot or per package.

Formula and methodology

Total area = length × width × number of rooms. Area with waste = total × (1 + waste%/100). Packages = area with waste ÷ coverage per package, rounded up. Cost = area × price (per sq ft) or packages × price (per package).

Worked example

Room: 12 ft × 12 ft = 144 sq ft, one room, 10% waste, 20 sq ft per package. With waste = 158.4 sq ft ÷ 20 = 7.92, so 8 packages. Enter the values above to confirm.

Helpful measurement tips

  • Buy from one production lot to avoid shade variation between planks.
  • Diagonal and herringbone layouts waste more — raise the allowance.
  • Let flooring acclimate in the room before installing to reduce gaps and buckling.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much flooring waste should I plan for?
About 10% for straight layouts, and 15% or more for diagonal patterns, angled rooms, or long planks.
How do I measure an irregular room?
Divide it into rectangles, calculate each area, add them, then apply the waste allowance to the total.
Should I round up to whole packages?
Yes. Flooring is sold by the package, and having a spare box for repairs is worth the small extra cost.
Does underlayment come separately?
Usually yes. Underlayment is priced and sold apart from the flooring itself, by area.
Can I mix packages from different lots?
Avoid it when possible. Different lots can vary slightly in shade and finish, which shows once installed.
How accurate is the estimate?
It is a planning figure. Real needs depend on layout and cuts, so verify your measurements and keep a spare package.
